INTERLINK HOUSING

Jamaica Plain, Boston

Through my filmic study of a studio apartment, I found the unit's spaces are not defined by physical divisions, but by the internal activity and movement that take place within them.

From this exploration, I developed a sectional link based on this idea of housing as an experiential walk-through: an open area where activity and movement define the boundaries within the space. To aggregate the links, I created the rule that each time one link joins with another, one of the links will provide an inserted mezzanine level within its neighboring link's double-height space. These pivot point moments, or overlapping Venn diagram spaces, are then defined as cores, surrounded by circulation and demarcated by shared wet and structural walls. My housing aggregation is composed up of these interlocking links which provide the framework for the units, each of which is completely singular and unique.
